US Bats Unstoppable
The USA beat Israel one run at a time.
After two scoreless innings the USA put up three runs to start the third. Nick Allen singled to right and was driven in on a double by Eddy Alvarez. Alvarez then came around on Tyler Austin’s homerun to center field.
1B Danny Valencia started the bottom of the 4th with a solo home run deep to left closing the gap 3-1. That was as loud as the Israeli bats would get. Ty Kelly and Mitch Glasser each had a double but Israel was unable to turn either one into anything.
In the top of the 6th Israel brought in Bleich, once again, for long relief. Todd Frazier reached on a fielding error by 2B Ian Kinsler. Mark Kolozsvary walked, advancing Kinsler to 2nd. Bubba Starling singled to center driving in Frazier for Israel’s first costly error in the game.
The 7th started off much like the 6th, with an error allowing the first batter to reach. Jamie Westbook took first on a dropped fly by left fielder Rob Paller. Eddy Alvarez then hit his 2nd double of the game to drive in Westbrook. Two errors by Israel, each costing them a run. Tyler Austin then doubled behind Alvarez and drove him in for the second RBI of the inning. The USA headed into the stretch ahead 6-1.
Eric Filia started off the 8th with a single to right. Kolozsvary grounded out, allowing Filia to advance to third. Starling then drove him in on another grounder. America’s final run came across in the top of the 9th. Austin reached on a double to right and was driven in on a single to Triston Casas. That left the USA ahead 8-1 heading into the bottom of the inning. Israel was unable to rally so the score would stand and Israel’s Olympic record dropped to 0-2.
Both Israel and the USA left six men on base. Though their errors cost them a few runs, they did not decide the game for Israel.
Israel has one final chance to advance to the second round. They will play the 3rd place team from Group A. That winner will advance. Israel has tomorrow off to regroup as they await their opponent’s final game of the round robin to close. Their next game will take place at 5:00am local time on Sunday, August 1, 2021.
In the interim, the team can say a proper goodbye, and good luck, to teammate Jon Mascot who has been diagnosed with a partially tore UCL sustained in yesterday’s game. We at EBSM wish him a speedy recovery.
