SVK Falls to AUT
Austria picked up their first W of tournament in a 4-3 victory over Slovakia.
The Austrians took an early lead in the bottom of the second. Sammy Hackle started things off with a double to right. Benni Salzmann followed him to the plate and reached on an errant throw by Slovakia’s 3B Denis Paksi that allowed Hackl to score and Benni to take second. Marcel Mariette sacrificed to center to allow Salzmann to come around for Austria’s second run.
In the top of the third Slovakia tied things up small-ball style. Matej Grendza-Donsky singled to right and Martin Brunegraf took another up the middle. Michal Esmir sent one to center and, just like that the bases were loaded up. Tomas Biskorovajny singled through the right side bringing around both Brunegraf and Esmir.
In the top of the 5th the Slovaks grabbed the lead. Biskorovanjny singled to second and was driven in off the bat of Mario Gottchall, who doubled to center.
Austria wasted no time answering. In the bottom of the inning CF Dominik Talir bunted third-base side to reach and took second on an error by Paksi who was responsible for all three of Slovakia’s errors on the day. Two quick outs were recorded before Ferdinand Obed homered deep to center to drive both men in and give Austria the lead once again. Austria retained their one-run lead to take the W.
Slovakia’s starter, LHP Jakub Izold, threw a complete game. Over 8 innings of work he gave up 2 earned runs off 4 hits, giving away as many free passes and striking out 5. Austria’s pen split the workload but starter Thierry Letouze, who lasted 6.0 innings, took the W. The RHP gave up 3 earned runs off 7 hits, walking two and striking out just as many.
