Spain and Slovakia opened the first day of the Women’s Softball European Championship in a solid match-up that ended in a 5-3 Spanish victory.

In the circle for Spain Beatriz Alonso threw a complete game striking out 11 and giving up 3 earned runs off 6 hits without offering up 1st to a single batter. Hurling for Slovakia was Dominika Rampackova who gave up 5 earned runs off 9 hits while striking out three and walking one.

Both hurlers posted goose eggs through two before Slovakia’s offense finally capitalized on a little small ball action driving one across with just five batters stepping up to the plate. Spain was quick to answer. Playing a little small ball of their own the Spaniards put up two before the inning came to a close.

Three more zeros posted before Spain expanded their lead in the bottom of the 5th courtesy of a 2-run shot deep to left off the bat of Raquel Moncho. That expanded their lead 4-1 heading into the 6th but this time, it was Slovakia’s turn to flip the 3rd inning’s results.

A double off the bat of Lilliana Kukuckova drove in one and a single by Ivana Petergacova got the second one across the plate. In the bottom of the inning Spain drove one in off another round of small ball.

That gave Spain an insurance run as they headed into Slovakia’s last ups. Alonso K’d their first two batters before she pitched the third into a ground out to end the game.
