Off to a rough start in their opening game of the Men’s Softball European Championship, Croatia bounced back against Slovakia, beating them by a final score of 5-2.
The warm up was key for Croatia. Slovakia was playing their first game of the tournament and it showed.
Errors loomed large for the Slovakian defense, who racked up three in the game. After a costly error and a couple of wild pitches, Croatia jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second. The Croatian’s never looked back tacking on four more runs in the bottom of the 4th with clutch hits by Ivančić Marko and Magdalenić Alen.
Down 5-0 heading into the 5th inning, Samek Peter opened the scoring for Slovakia with a solo home run. The Slovakian comeback was short-lived however. They would score just once more but it wouldn’t come until the 7th.
Starting pitchers for both squads threw complete games. Kratochvíl Tomáš for Slovakia gave up all five runs but managed to strike out five batters in the process. On the other side Kukolja Bruno threw a gem for Croatia, only giving up three hits and two runs while collecting 11 strikeouts.
Slovakia is back in action against Israel, and Croatia’s next matchup is The Netherlands, when play resumes tomorrow.
