In a pitching dual that ended in favor of a very fortunate Croatian team the Croatians improve to 1-1 while Denmark drops to 0-2.
Croatia committed three errors in the game. Denmark capitalized on one of them. In the top of the 6th, Cecille Johansen reached on an error by Croatia’s 2B Lorena Puskaric that allowed her to reach and the run to score. Two plays later, Johansen crossed the plate on a triple by CF Carnia Thorslund. That accounted for both of Denmark’s runs in the game.
Once again the Danes put Nielsen in the circle and she did not disappoint. Mathilde threw a complete game striking out 11 along the way. She’s struck out 18 batters in 10 innings of work since the week began.
Croatian hurler Marina Vitalich also threw a complete game. She threw just 100 pitches, 77 for strikes and rung up 15 on her own. She gave up no earned runs or walks in the game.
In fact, despite Croatia committing two errors in the top of the 1st, neither team crossed the plate until the bottom of the 4th. Nielsen gave a 2-out free pass to Addison Kostrenchich. That brought Rita Despot to the plate. Despot hit an inside-the-park homerun and, just like that the score was 2-0.
In the bottom of the 5th Croatia added, what would turn out to be, their insurance run in similar fashion. With two outs in the inning, Lara Kljucaric was walked. Next up, Eowyn Marjanovic tripled to right sending her home.
