German Over Sweden

European Championship Baseball 2019 GER v SWE PC: Schweden

In the final game of the opening round of the European Championship Germany defeated Sweden 9-1 under the lights in Bonn.

Germany wasted no time letting Sweden know they were in it to win. They put 3 runs on the board in the 1stand one more each of the next two innings. That left them ahead 5-1 heading into the 4th. The next 4 innings were scoreless for all parties. Germany tacked on an additional 3 in the 8thand 1 more in the 9thto insure the win.

There were very few opportunities for Sweden’s pen to take a deep breath against Germany’s lineup. Donald Lutz, Max Boldt and Pascal Amon were strong threats to the Swedish pen. All 3 men had 2 hits and 2 RBIs on the day. Lutz and Amon, both former Red organization players, also had a run. Marco Cardoso had 1 run off 3 hits, including a double. It was centerfielder Kevin Kotowski who posed the largest threat however. He had 2 runs off 3 hits, including a double, and an RBI.

Both teams shared the burden across their pens. Germany started the game with Twins prospect RHP Niklas Rimmel. He went 2.2 innings giving up 2 hits and an earned run while striking out 4. He also walked 2 and threw wild twice. In to replace him, Samuel Steigert, who got the W, went 5.1 innings giving up just 2 hits on the night. Sweden went through 5 pitchers. It was their starter, Jesper Svedhem who was credited with the loss. In his 3.0 innings of work he gave up 5 earned runs off 7 hits while walking 4 and striking out 2.
