Belgium Tops Austria

In a game interrupted by storm clouds, Belgium defeated Austria 5-1 on Day 1 of the European Championship. 

 

Belgium put up the first 2 runs of the game in the bottom of the 2nd. They would add 3 more after the delay, all in the 8th. Austria fought back in the top of the 9thgetting one on the board but no more. 

 

The difference in this game was run production. Austria had 6 hits but just 1 run while Belgium had 5 runs off 5 hits. 

 

Starting pitchers for both teams went 7.0 innings. Christian Tomsich took the loss having given up 2 earned runs off 4 hits while striking out 5 for Austria. Cedric Desmedt recorded Belgium’s W having given up no runs off 4 hits while striking out 5. 

 

On offense it was the centerfielder for both teams that earned a nod. Belgium’s Steven De Lannoy, had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. For Australia Dominik Talir had two hits, including a double, and the only RBI of the day for the club.
