Winter's Champions

Brisbane Bandit Ryan Bollinger

As spring training begins winter ball comes to a close. Here's how all your favorite players finished their seasons abroad.

Ryan Bollinger

Winter: Brisbane Bandits

Team: Munich-Haar Disciples

National Team: USA – NA

Position: LHP

Game Notes: Bollinger posted a 3.48 ERA over 9 games with a 5-1 record. He gave up 21 earned runs in 54.1 innings of work, striking out 75 while walking just 12. Ryan, along with teammate Donald Lutz, finished the season in 1st helping the Bandits to make ABL history by three-peating the championship.

Wilson Lee

Winter: Adelaide Bite

Team: Solingen Alligators

National Team: Australia - 2016

Position: RHP

Game Notes: Lee has not hit the mound since January. Instead, he finished the season hanging out in the daisies. Wilson played more than 30 innings in the outfield this season for the Bite where he posted a perfect fielding percentage.

Donald Lutz

Winter: Brisbane Bandits

Team: Brisbane Bandits

National Team: Germany - 2016

Position: 1st Baseman,

Game Notes: On January 17, 2018, the Cincinnati Reds named Lutz to their AZL Reds coaching staff for the spring. Before leaving Brisbane though Don made the most of his time. Lutz played in 36 games hitting .281 over 121 at bats, including 16 homeruns on the season. His team took the ABL championship title for the third year running.

Bas Nooij

Winter: Adelaide Bite

Team: Amsterdam Pirates

National Team: The Netherlands - 2013

Position: Catcher, Outfielder

Game Notes: Hitting .244 on the season, Bas batted in 10 games with 21 hits and 9 runs. He maintained a strong fielding percentage in the crouch with a .994 including 150 putouts and 16 assists and he caught 8 stealing. When given the chance to stretch his legs a bit in the outfield, he maintained a perfect fielding percentage over 24.0 innings.

Sven Schüller

Winter: Sydney Blue Sox

Team: Rancho Cucamonga Quakes

National Team: Germany - 2016

Position: RHP

Game Notes: Sven didn’t see much work before the Blue Sox season ended. He added just 1 inning of play to his January average and it did nothing to help his cause. Schuller finished the season posting a 10.80 ERA but he also only saw 11.2 innings of play all season. Given that the team failed to make the playoffs, and Schuller’s previous successes, both in the ABL and MiLB, there are likely contributing factors to the jump in his ERA.

Loek Van Mil

Winter: Adelaide Bite

National Team: The Netherlands - 2017

Position: RHP

Game Notes: Van Mil finished the season with a 3.63 ERA over 16 games where he put in 22.1 innings of work. Loek gave up just 9 earned runs off 23 hits for an opposition average of .264.

Kingsley Avery

Winter: Western Magpies

Team: Sparks Haarlem

National Team: New Zealand – 2016

Position: Centerfielder

Game Notes: Since January the Magpies have only participated in a single tournament and Avery was not included on the game roster.

Lisa Maulden

Winter: Auckland Magpies

Team: Budapest Reds

National Team: USA - NA

Position: Utility Infielder

Game Notes: In February the Magpies participated in the Doreen Hitchings tournament. Over the weekend, Maulden had 4 hits and 7 RBIs while striking out just once over 10 plate appearances for a .400 tournament average.

Amber Schisler

Winter: Western Magpies

Team: Linz Witches

National Team – USA – NA

Position: P, 1st base

Game Notes: Schisler was named MVP after hitting .556 during the Doreen Hutchings Tournament held earlier this month.

Alyson Spinas-Valainis

Winter: Howick Softball Club

Team: SK Jourds Praha

National Team: Czech Republic – NA

Game Notes: Spinas-Valainis was also present during the Doreen Hutchings Tournament but accumulated too few plate appearances over her two games to register an average.

My Törnblom

Winter: Horwick Softball Club

Team: Hamburg Knights

National Team: Sweden – NA

Position, P, SS

Game Notes: Törnblom hit .250 during the Doreen Hutchings Tournament making four plate appearances in two games.

Curt Smith

Winter: Tigres Chinandega

Team: Lincoln Salt Dogs

National Team: The Netherlands - 2017

Position: Utility Infielder

Game Notes: Earlier this month Curt and his teammates were crowned champions of the LBPN for 2018. This marked his 2nd consecutive championship with the team.
