That's A Wrap

October 31, 2017

With new champions in Austria, Belgium, Poland and Switzerland, the 2017 European baseball season came to a close over the weekend.

Austria

In Austria it was the Vienna Wanderers, coached by national team coach Hiroyuki Sakanashi, facing off against the Attnang-Puchheim Athletics.

Every game was nothing short of action-packed with the lead often flipping faster than a half-inning switch. The series stretched to Game 7 where, at last, the defending champions emerged victorious to capture their 2nd consecutive Baseball League Austria title and the 4th title since 2008.

Belgium

It was the K. Borgerhout Squirrels of Antwerp who beat the Brasschaat Braves for this season’s BBG title. In softball the women from Hoboken finished the season on top beating the 2nd place Royal Greys in championship action.

For the men, the Brasschaat Braves softball team was able to finish the job in proper form capturing their second title in as many months. The championship victory comes on the heels of their Men’s European Super Cup win at the start of September. In this month’s championship matchup it was the Hoboken Pioneers who took the number two spot.

Poland

KS Silesia Rybnik is having quite the month! First they win our #TeamLogoTuesday weekly competition and now they’re holding the cup in Poland. They defeated another Tuesday winner, the Wroclaw Barons, for the title. In women’s softball it was the other team from Wroclaw, Hrabiny Softball, who emerged victorious.

Switzerland

A few weeks back the Therwil Flyers softball club captured the Cup in Switzerland. This week, it was their brothers on the baseball field making it a full sweep for the club in 2017 championships.

After losing the lead to the Barracudas in the middle innings, the Flyers remained back by a single run through the middle of the 9th. At the bottom of the inning they were able to tie it up and force extra innings. At the top of the 10th Zurrich loaded them up before Therwil was able to record the 3rd out. Having escaped unscathed the Flyers went on the offensive in the bottom of the 10th and ensured their victory.

With these games in the books that pretty much wraps up the 2017 European Baseball & Softball seasons. Softball continues in Croatia for the men and Malta for the women but, aside from these locations, all the major leagues across Europe are done until spring.

That doesn't mean the end of the season for many of your favorite European players however. We'll have monthly updates from their work abroad as several players head to Australia and New Zealand to continue their seasons.
