New Super Champs

Brasschaat (BEL) wins the Men’s European Super Cup for 2017 in a 3-2 victory over Hippos Havlickuv B. (CZE). Placing 3rd in the tournament was Spectrum Praha (CZE).

While collectively these teams did very well, not too many of their players made leader board appearances. This is reflective of the lenient requirements compared to other tournaments. The minimum for hitting was one at bat in one game. For pitching, it was one inning for one game. Compared to the women’s tournaments, which had a minimum requirement of 2.1 innings/game, this was a very low bar indeed.

A huge surprise for the tournament was the performance of the Italian All Stars. Over the past two years, Italy’s Pro Roma has taken home the title. An All Star team implied another victory on the horizon for the red, white and green. The results show it takes more than talent to make a team.

The All Stars failed to win a single game despite five on the starting lineup having played for Pro Roma in the 2016 Cup. Like the All Stars, HSV Spikes from The Netherlands left the tournament without a win. Both teams finished 0-6 for the event.

Denmark’s teams showed strong throughout the Cup. Though not fairing as well in the final games the Amager Vikings walked away with a record of 9-3 and a 1st place in the ESF Cup. The ESF Cup runs simultaneously with the Super Cup and is a separate qualifier for next year's Super Cup. The Stenlose Bulls finished the tournament in 4th place with a record of 6-2.

The youngest two teams on the field, Argentina’s junior national team and the Czech Republic’s U23 team held their own. With a record of 5-3, Argentina finished the tournament in 5th place overall. While the Czech team finished with just two wins, they still placed in the tournament.

Out of Croatia MRKI Medvedi started the week strong winning their first few games handily. Their first victory came in 5 innings with a 10-run margin. The next night they lost by 7 but were back on the other side of that equation the very next game with a 14-run lead after 4. Overall, their fate was sealed by their luck in the draw. 3-5 games were against teams from The Netherlands (#3) and The Czech Republic (#1) in the European rankings and, of those two were against the same team.
