The 15th Men’s Softball World Championship is underway in Whitehorse, Canada. Teams from 16 countries, including four European teams, are competing for the title. Representing the EU are the Czech Republic, Great Britain, Denmark and newcomers this year, Turkey. The tournament is set up in two pools and each team plays a single game/day. The series began on the 5th of July and the preliminary rounds will run through the 13th before the semi’s begin. In the European matchups, we’ve already seen The Czech Republic beat Denmark on day one of play. Malecek Ondrej was the winning pitcher and Brenik Jaroslav was credited with the save. Catcher David Mertl, Centerfielder Petr Vácha and 2nd baseman Patrik Kolkus each scored a run with Vácha and Kolkus, as well as 3rd baseman Václav Svoboda batting one in for the Czech Republic. For Denmark Hansen Kim took the loss while right fielder Anton Brown and pinch runner Duncan Milne each scored runs driven in by 1st baseman Daniel Julenon and catcher Anders Jørgensen. On day two Demark once again faced a continental matchup taking on Great Britain. This time, it would be the Danish who emerged victorious. In a 3-0 win, Hansen Kim was able to record a W this time pitching a complete game shutout while giving up just 4 hits and no walks while 12 strikeouts on the day. Leftfielder Valdemar Terkelsen, right fielder Anton Brown and 1st baseman Daniel Julenon each scored a run. Julenon was the only player to get an RBI on the day. The losing pitcher in this day’s matchup was Kyle Linton who pitched 6 innings giving up just 1 earned run. He also struck out 10 but also walked 8. Attendance for the on both days averaged 200. There will be four more EU contests before the semi’s begin. Action starts at 12am CET on July 11th when the Czech Republic take on Great Britain. Later in the evening it will be Turkey v Denmark starting at 20:30 CET. On the 12th you can catch Great Britain and Turkey starting at 23:00 CET and finally, on the way into work on the 14th you can catch Turkey v the Czech Republic in their 7:00 CET meeting.
