Many leagues are winding down for the winter. Here’s a look at those who recorded playing time over the holiday season. 

 

 

 

Australian Baseball League

 

Donald Lutz

Winter: Brisbane Bandits

Team: Free Agent

Position: 1st Baseman/Outfield 

Game Notes: batting .323 for the season. This is up by .40 over his average in the ABL during the 2011 and 2016 seasons.   

 

Bas Nooij, Netherlands

Winter: Adelaide Bite 

Team: Formerly with the Amsterdam Pirates 

Position: Catcher

Game Notes: In his first season of the ABL, Nooij is maintaining a .316 batting average. 

 

Sven Schüller, Germany

Winter: Sydney Blue Sox

Team: Ogden Raptors – Rookie 

League: Pioneer League 

Parent Club: Los Angeles Dodgers

Position: RHP

Game Notes: Named to the All Star team, Schüller is posting a 5.54 ERA in 12 games and has an 0-3 record.

 

Loek van Mil, Netherlands 

Winter: Adelaide Bite 

Team: Curacao Neptunus

Parent Club: Minnesota Twins 

Position: RPH

Game Notes: In 13 games van Mil has a .52 ERA and an 0-2 win/loss record in 17.1 innings of relief.

Game Notes: Winner of the Best Batter Award. Named to the All-Tournament Team as shortstop. The Queensland Heat won the Gilley's Shield, Australia’s Softball Championship trophy.

Virginie Anneveld, Netherlands

Position: 3rd 

Game Notes: 19 seems to be Anneveld’s number. In 19 games she’s had 19 runs off 19 hits. Her .380 batting average is 5th in the league and includes 14 RBIs.  

 

Anton Brown, Denmark

Position: Catcher

Game Notes: Having made just seven plate appearances Brown is currently batting .400.

 

Veronika Peckova, Czech Republic

Team: Howick Softball Club

Position: Pitcher

Game Notes: Hitting a respectable .250 for a pitcher, Veronika’s performance on the other side of the bat has been outstanding. In 55.2 innings she’s struck out 92 while walking just 16. Her ERA is 3rd best in the league at .72.  

 

Jiří Korčák, Czech Republic

Team: Howick Softball Club

Position: SS, 2nd 

Game Notes: In 10 at bats Jiří has two hits, including a triple.   

 

Martin Simonsen, Denmark

Team: Northcote Softball

Game Notes: Simonsen is batting .278 with just three hits, including two triples. 

 

Martin Turek, Czech Republic

Game Notes: de Caster is hitting .328 with 29 RBIs over 32 games.  

 

Dashenko Ricardo, Curaçao

Winter: Tigres de Chinadega

Team: Curacao Neptunus 

Position: Catcher 

Game Notes: Averaging a hit a game Ricardo has 26 hits in as many games with 15 RBIs. 

 

Francisco Taveras, Netherlands

Winter: Tigres de Chinadega

Team: Released before the 2016 season by the AZL Rangers 

Position: Pitcher 

Game Notes: After posting a 7.11 ERA in his first 19 innings of the season, Taveras has not played another inning. His last game was in November. 

 

Curt Smith, Curaçao 

Winter: Tigres de Chinandega

Team: Lincoln Salt Dogs 

League: American Association 

Parent Club: Independent Club 

Position: RF

Game Notes: With 35 runs and 64 walks Smith continues to lead his team in home runs with 10 on the season. He’s currently posting a .381 batting average, second on the roster behind a person with just 2 at bats for the year.  

 

 

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League

 

Shairon Martis, Curaçao

Winter: Aguilas del Zulia

Team: Lincoln Salt Dogs

League: American Association

Parent Club: Independent Club

Position: RPH

Game Notes: In December Martis’ ERA rose to 5.18 over 41.2 innings. His current record is 0-4 in 11 games
