ITA Take Premiere Cup
In the Women's European Premiere Cup it was Italy that came out on top. Bussolengo beat the Terrasvogels from the Netherlands 8-0 for the title. Joudrs Praha finished in 3rd place. Bussolengo was undefeated in the tournament winning all 10 of their games.
Not surprisingly they topped the team leader boards. In addition to leading in fielding with a .988 fielding percentage having committed just 3 errors in all their games, the team’s cumulative batting average of .378 included 64 runs off 88 hits and 17 extra base hits. Of those 16 extra base hits, one person was responsible for all the triples and home runs recorded. That person was Britt Vonk.
The 25-year old Dutch native is a 2008 Olympiad who joined the club in Bussolengo this season. She has also played in Australia for Queensland and in America for the NPF. During the Cup Vonk hit .579 over 8 games and 19 appearances. She scored 11 runs off 11 hits including 5 triples and a home run. Britt was also responsible for 6 RBIs while walking 9 times. On the field she had 14 putouts and 15 assists while maintaining a 1.000 fielding percentage at 2nd. Vonk also topped the leader boards in runs scored, total bases and triples. She also was tops in batting for people with more than one at bat.
The team also dominated the tournament in pitching but you won’t see any of them on the boards. That’s because, to make the leader boards a pitcher has to have a minimum of 2.1 innings pitched/game. Because of their dominance on the field, none of their players could make the qualifying mark. All but three of their ten games ended in a shutout and four of those ended in six innings or less.
Kelsy Jane Nunley had a tremendous outing on the mound. She had 4 wins and maintained a 0.00 ERA over 19.2 innings giving up 7 hits but no runs. She walked 1 while striking out 36. Nunley was not the only superstar in the pen. Collectively, the Italian pitchers had a .34 cummulative ERA. The next closest team ERA was 1.09. Alice Nicolini maintained a .36 over 19.2 innings accumulating 2 wins while striking out 19. Jolene Henderson had a .46 ERA over 15.1 innings and earned two of her own. Veronica Comar rounded out the group with a .95 ERA, also winning 2. Comparatively, the collective ERA of their opposition in games against them was 5.72.
