EU Baseball Celebrates 4th
The 4th of July. The day the American people celebrate the country's independence from Britain. Over the years much has been written about, and around, this glorious summer's day filled with picnics, fireworks and baseball. This year, teams across Europe decided to use the date as a kick-off for their own brand of summertime celebrations.
Czech Republic & Germany
In a three-day friendly matchup between the Czech Republic and German national teams, the two teams will meet up in stadiums across Germany. The series began on the 4th in Heidenheim, Germany where the Czech team took the first game 7-1.
The final two games will be played in Regensburg at the Armin Wolf Arena beginning at 7:00pm. Games will be live streamed over Legionaere's TV and commentated by Tim Collins, Heidenheim's home play-by-play guy.
Hyde Park was filled with MLB talent for a 4th of July extravagnza the MLB Battleground. MLB UK and the US Embassy co-created the event which not only featured MLB talent but offered local players tips of the trade.
Italian baseball player Federico Celli got to put on the Dodger blue one last time as he suited up for Cliff Floyd's team representing the West Coast. They faced off against Germany's Julsan Kamara in Boston's Sox gear for the East. At night's end it was Celli who walked away with the home run derby title.
The event included exploding targets, live DJ and food trucks as well as an outdoor cinema and battle cage experience. English cricket stars, along with All Stars Carlos Pena and Shawn Green, rounded out the rosters.
The Romanian Embassy continued their celebrations surrounding Jackie Robinson's legacy by creating a baseball-themed 4th of July party. Former MLB players were on-hand to run clinics and Robinson's daughter was part of the extravaganza. Along with the Romanian national baseball team, the embassy celebrated America's pastime, and holiday, in full form. We'll be covering this event extensively, including an interview with Robinson's daughter, following the conclusion of their week-long celebrations.
